Reading: "Young Writers" (Hansen) 01-26

A) [WRITING TO DESCRIBE] Chapter's "key word" = share
Students must be encouraged to share their writing with their peers, teachers, family, friends, and themselves in order to hear their voice, received feedback, and the support to continue writing.
B) [WRITING TO INTERPRET] I think the main message of this chapter is create classroom environments where students not only are free to write their thoughts, but also free to share their ideas with their peers and teacher to receive feedback and encouragement. Teachers must create a space where students feel safe to express their thoughts, unafraid of making mistakes. When they have the support to transport their internal words into visible letters, students gain the confidence to continue writing. However, the sharing process is crucial as well because that is when students can evaluate what they have written, listen from others what they did well and how they can improve, and share new ideas with other students.
C) [WRITING TO INTERROGATE] Should the teacher correct the student's spelling? In the examples given throughout the chapter, the students misspelled many words. So should the teacher write the correct spelling on a separate sheet or on the paper itself in order for the students to learn correct spelling? Would that be helpful or more discouraging to the students?
D) [WRITING TO EVALUATE]
- teach students how to give helpful feedback (encouragement and critiques)
- make it part of the writing process for peer review
- have students read their writing out loud (they need to hear their voice! helps them make sense of their writing)
- plan a small window of time where students can write anything (maybe do an exercise where they rewrite the same story in different genres, such as poem, narrative, and dialogue)
